Rockshox has re-invented the SID lineup for 2009! With newly updated 32mm 700 series aluminum stanchions and an updated 1-piece magnesium lower legs with Power Bulge reinforcement in the lower bushing area increase rigidity and longevity while not sacrificing weight.
SID Race still uses the Dual Air spring system with motion control hydraulic damping with external compression and lockout, rebound and floodgate adjusters, and with a Pop-Loc upgrade available, a handlebar remote. The new lower legs allow up to a 2.4' tire and as much as a 185mm disc rotor. Good shock, but not as good as some. The front tire kept rubbing the stanchions on off camber drops over 12' during my cross country races. After a pleasure ride at Winter Park on the race trail in the mountains I was very worried at the amount of tire rub when crossing ruts or dropping.
I replaced the hub bearings and the skewer with a beefier one, but it still rubbed. Finally went to a Fox Float 120 mm and haven't rubbed since. The Fox weighs the same as my SID 100 mm, but feels much stiffer. I weigh 190 lbs. So not sure why my SID rubbed so much. Good shock, but not as good as some. Dd Saptagiri Channel Programs here. This is a great value. It's a very light weight fork, with a stiff chassis on par with an 32mm fork, with an excellent compression damping system. It's compression damping system is very versatile, and can be set up to emulate a platform, or extremely plush.
Personally, I run enough low speed compression damping to control brake dive and pedal bob, and then lower the high speed damping to just above it. If you look on eBay, you can buy a new one for a little over $400. I can also still get this work with v-brake bosses. There were some quality issues with mine, and had to replace the Dual Air unit. The build quality also just isn't as nice as a Fox. The knobs don't have detentes on them, so you have to count turns, and the low speed compression knob is also your lockout, so good luck hitting your previous setting coming off lock out.
Maintenance is also a bit annoying since you need to inject oil into a hole hidden up inside the leg of the fork; this gets messy. Finally, the rebound. The Race comes with a port orifice damping system, so if you're taking fast, successive hits like in a rock garden or a rooted trail, the fork packs down and essentially becomes very stiff. You cannot adjust around this.
