It seems that many (perhaps all) of the German lens manufacturers number their lenses consecutively without making a distinction between different models. In contrast, it seems that the Japanese manufacturers are more likely to assign blocks of serial numbers to a particular lens model. This means that to date a lens, you would need a date/serial number table particular to that lens model, e.g., a table just for the 300 mm Nikkor-M.

Separate serial number ranges for each lens is known to be Nikon's practice for 35 mm lenses, and has been identified by Kerry Thalmann as Fujinon's practice for LF lenses (I am guessing that it is also Nikon's practice for LF lenses.
